Goodbye Google Reader

Have you heard that as of July 1, Google Reader is going away? That means if you’re currently following your favorite blogs using Google Reader, you’ll have to come up with another alternative before then.

It looks like about 35% of my readers follow this blog using Google Reader, or GR, and I definitely don’t want to lose you in July. That’s why I want to recommend Feedly

Feedly has always played well with GR, and for that reason they’ve got a great transition plan for those who currently use Google Reader, to ease the pain that readers will feel when Google turns off GR in July.

But why wait for the transition plan? You can go ahead and move to Feedly right now, and you’ll be ahead in the game!

Just click on over to Feedly and this is what you’ll see:

The simplest way to get started, in my opinion, is to click the “connect to Google Reader”. You’ll have to authorize Feedly to access your Google Reader feed, but once you do that, it will do the rest. It will sync with GR to move all your subscriptions over to Feedly, where you can access them on your desktop and mobile devices.

There are other alternatives to Google Reader (like using Facebook and Twitter to track your favorite blogs), but Feedly is, in my opinion, going to feel more like what you’re used to.

I’m not happy about the fact that Google Reader is going away, but I can breathe a little easier knowing that Feedly will pick up right where GR leaves off.

Oh! Subscribing via email is always an option, too. You can subscribe to The Lazy Pit Bull by clicking here.

So, will you be moving to Feedly today?

  1. So, out of interest, I decided to check out Feedly, figuring I didn’t have to stick with it if I didn’t end up liking it, but why not. But, when I went to the website and clicked the install feedly to Chrome button, it wanted permission to access my data on all website and access my tabs and browsing history. It seemed really invasive to me, so I terminated the install process.

  2. Interesting. I was not aware of that. I really thought it only showed Blogger blogs. Good to know! As I said, I am moving to WordPress soon (as soon as I can muster the courage!), and taking this same domain name with me. I hope I’ll keep showing up in your feed! :)

  3. The Blogger dashboard reading list does show updates from blogs that are hosted places other than Blogger. I know I follow a number of blogs that either own their domains or use wordpress, and they show up there. Occasionally a blog will have an issue with showing up, but I think those are mostly self published ones.

  4. Sure will. I heard good things about Newsblur but they are having a meltdown right now and not allowing any new FREE account users to register :/

  5. Disqus seems to be eating my comments! If you find something you like better than Feedly, let me know. I’m currently using Feedly on desktop and iPad, and it works well.

  6. Linda, see what you think of Feedly and let me know!

  7. I’m using Feedly on my desktop and iPad, and I’m pretty happy with it. It’s not Google Reader, but it’s the best I’ve found. If you find something better, please let me know.

  8. Crystal, I might be wrong, but I think if you’re looking at that reading list, you’re only seeing blogs that are on Blogger. I will be moving to WordPress soon, so I don’t think this blog will continue to show up on that list,

  9. I have always just used the reading list on my Blogger dashboard. I know it connects to Google Reader, but I don’t think it is the same thing…

  10. Oh man, I read this as I was scanning my reader in bed this morning. I instantly got mad! I love my Google Reader :( . Then I started looking at other options and unfortunately Feedly is the best I’ve found so far. I use a reader on the web, my phone, and tablet so finding on that is capable of all, narrows it to like 3. :( Oh I’m soooooo mad at Google right now!

  11. Thanks for the great information.
I for one have over 30 blogs I read in GR.
