Whether or not you allow your dog into the bedroom at night, I think we all can agree that having a nice, comfy, cozy bedroom is a luxury everyone appreciates. When it’s time to lay your head on the pillow at bedtime, don’t we all want a soothing, comfortable place to get our beauty sleep?
As someone who is a notoriously bad sleeper (and apparently it’s hereditary, because I come from a long line of bad sleepers), I am always looking for ways to turn my bedroom into the peaceful sanctuary where I can relax, recharge, and get the rest I need. Today I’m sharing my 5 tips for creating the perfect bedroom with you.
1. The Perfect Bed
A good night’s sleep begins with the perfect bed, and the perfect bed starts with the right mattress. Whether you like it soft, medium, or firm is a personal choice. I believe that it’s important to invest in a high quality mattress, and then take care of it. Rotate it often, use a good mattress pad or cover, and when it’s time to replace your mattress, do it. Don’t put it off because how well we do anything in life is largely dependent upon how well rested we are. Look at the purchase of a good mattress as an investment in your quality of life.
Once you’ve got the right mattress, it’s time to make your bed with comfortable, cozy bedding. Here are a few things you’ll need:
- I mentioned a mattress pad or cover above. This is your first line of defense in protecting your mattress from dirt, stains, even dust mites.
- A mattress topper is an excellent way to add a layer of soft, luxurious comfort. My favorite offers a down alternative, providing allergy relief for those with allergies to down. They’re every bit as comforting as a feather bed, but without the sneezing.
- A high quality sheet set is a must. I personally like a 400 thread count sheet set (anything less than that feels like sand paper to me). According to an article in the Huffington Post, “buy above a 200-thread count sheet, and know that anything over an 800-thread count really doesn’t matter.” Again, I think this is a personal choice and you should go with whatever feels good to you.
- Comfortable pillows complete your bedding ensemble, and of course again it’s all about your personal preference. I like fluffy pillows myself, and I always sleep with at least 2. What’s your preference?
2. The Perfect Temperature
For me, the temperature in my bedroom is a major factor in whether or not I sleep well. For me, and for most people, a cool, dark room is the best environment for sleeping. I like room-darkening blinds to block the light from my bedroom, and if you keep them closed during the day, they’ll also help regulate the temperature in the room. You can also get room-darkening drapes.
To keep the bedroom cool, and also to provide the white noise I so desperately need to sleep, I always use a small fan. Apparently this is pretty common; do you use a fan or another device for white noise?
3. Control the Clutter
I don’t know about you, but I just cannot relax in a cluttered, chaotic room. For me, it’s super important to keep my bedroom organized and free of piles of stuff. Put dirty laundry out of sight in a hamper. Clear books and magazines from night stands. Make sure shoes, purses, and bags are stashed away in a closet. Leave the mail and newspapers outside the bedroom. I really believe that putting everything in its proper place and keeping the clutter in the bedroom to a minimum creates a feng shui balance that invites a restful night’s sleep.
4. Turn Off the Screens
Y’all, I love watching videos and reading ebooks on my iPad in bed. But in the last few months, since I learned that screen time before bed can impact a person’s quality of sleep, I’ve been putting the devices away and shutting off the television at least 30 minutes before I want to fall asleep. And I’m not kidding, it’s made a world of difference. I truly believe that for the best night’s sleep, it’s important to limit the use of phone, tablets, and TV as bedtime approaches.
5. Close the Door
If you have a door on your bedroom, close it at bedtime. I’ve found this to be an important part of creating the quiet, cozy sanctuary where I can get the best quality of sleep. Closing the door will also help control noise and temperature in the bedroom.
Life is hard, y’all. In order to keep at it day in and day out, a good night’s sleep is one of the most luxurious gifts you can give yourself, and creating the perfect bedroom should be a priority for all of us.
