Homemade Medication Capsules – How to Hide a Pill for Your Pet

Getting the right diagnosis and treatment for your dog is only half the battle. Not all of our pets are ready to take medicines, especially pills, without complaint. Some desperately resist, while others will hide the pill in their mouth and sneak it out. However, there are several ways to give the pill quickly and effectively.

Disguise

The most dog-friendly option is to hide the medicine in something tasty. A ball of canned food will do just fine. At the same time, it is undesirable to crush the tablet: some drugs from this reduces the effectiveness. You can give a treat with a “surprise” as a reward for a completed command.

True, there is a nuance. This method is suitable only for medicines with neutral flavor: a bitter tablet the dog will spit out when he bites it. And also remember its smell, and more cunning will never work. True, there are still drugs that must be given before or after a meal, not during. In this case, a pill dispenser may be useful.

Tablet Dumpster

A simple, reusable device, also known as an introdoser or pillbox. You can find it in almost any veterinary pharmacy. It is similar to a syringe, but instead of a needle, there are grips on the end that hold the pill or capsule. If your dog spits out the pill, open his mouth with one hand and with the other, slip the introdoser inside so that the medication is near the root of the tongue. By gently pressing the piston, the grippers will open and the tablet will fall out. Next, remove the pill dispenser, close the pet’s mouth and, raising its head slightly, stroke the throat to stimulate swallowing.
