All of a sudden, the Danish concept of “hygge” (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is all the rage. But the truth is, my dogs and I were practicing hygge long before it was trendy.
So what is hygge, you ask? In general it means “cozy” and as it turns out, a few of the key elements of hygge include warm blankets, woolly socks and sweaters, hot drinks, and toasty fireplaces… all things my dogs and I love.
Hygge is a state of mental balance and psychological well-being, boiling down to self-care and minimalism, slowing down to savor life and enjoy the little things.
Hygge is enjoying the good things in life with good people and pets, creating a warm atmosphere, relaxing, destressing, and feeling at peace.
Winter is the perfect time to practice hygge as you hibernate in your warm home with your loved ones, dog included. Below I’m sharing 5 ways to hygge with your dog this winter.
5 Ways to Hygge With Your Dog This Winter
1) Have a movie night
Cuddle up on the couch with your dog and your significant other to watch a movie. Snuggle under a pile of warm blankets and fluffy pillows and enjoy your favorite flick. A couple of our picks are Breakfast at Tiffany’s and The Parent Trap.
2) Candles, candles, and more candles
Candles are an important element of hygge. They make your space feel warm, cozy, and inviting. I love to use flameless candles because they are safer than regular candles. There’s no fire hazard or smoky fumes, making them safe to use around pets and kids.
Imagine yourself curled up with your dog and a good book, wearing cozy socks and covered with a chunky knit blanket. No phone. No TV. Just you, your mutt, and a few hours lost in the pages of your latest read. That sounds like heaven to me. This year I’m reading the Kinsey Milhone series from Sue Grafton.
4) Get outside
Yes, it’s cold outside but a little fresh air and activity can be renewing for both you and your dog. Dress for the weather so that you are completely comfortable. A cute scarf, hat, and gloves is a good start, then get out there and enjoy the beauty of the season.
Unwind, slow down, and enjoy life. Realize that you don’t have to be busy and on the go all the time. Enjoy relaxing time at home with friends, family, pets, and even by yourself.
Hygge is more than a cozy home filled with warm blankets and soft candles. It’s a way of thinking, feeling, and being kind to yourself. And let’s be honest: the world could use a little more kindness.
