I’ve had dogs my entire life, since even before I can remember having them, but deep down I always considered myself a cat person.
It wasn’t until I met my soulmate, a Pit Bull mix named after a shoe, that I realized I’m actually a dog person of the highest order.
When my son was a freshman in college, he brought her home: a tiny 4-week old whiny girl that he named Nike. And I can’t explain it, but I instantly connected with this dog unlike any other pet I’d ever known, with the exception of my kitty soulmate, a cross-eyed Siamese named Spooky who I was blessed to live with for almost 18 years before he died in 2002.
Who’s to say why some pets seem to wiggle their way so deep into your heart that you can’t remember how you ever got by without them, but that’s exactly what this girl did for both me and my husband. Although it was our son who brought her home, Nike became our girl at a time when we both needed a best friend other than one another.
To her daddy, Nike is the adoring playmate who waits at the door every evening when he returns home from work; the girl who greets him with unbridled excitement, energy, and love whether he’s been gone an hour or a day.
To me, she is a loving confidant, a warm cuddle buddy, and as I tell her every day, the love of my life.
I know there are many people who see dogs simply as pets, but we view our girl as part of our family. She isn’t “just a dog”, and she isn’t disposable or replaceable. She’s a one-of-a-kind best friend who brings happiness to every day. She’s a perfect match made in heaven for our family, and we’re blessed.
